POSITION: FIREFIGHTER/EMT

General Purpose:
Protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and other duties, as assigned. Maintains Fire/EMS equipment, apparatus, and facilities.

Supervision Received:
Works under the direct supervision of a Captain or Lieutenant, as needed.

Supervision Exercised:
None.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
A. Responds as dispatched within the district and on mutual aid assignments.
B. Provides EMS treatment in accordance with standard protocols and/or hospital direction.
C. Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment, extinguishment and overhaul tasks.
D. Performs salvage operation such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
E. Writes reports accurately and in a timely manner, documenting incident data, patient assessment, and patient treatment.
F. Receives and relays fire and/or EMS calls and alarms.
G. Operate radio and other communication equipment.
H. Participates in the inspection of businesses, buildings, hydrants, residential locations, and other structures in suppression pre-plan programs.
I. Performs minor repairs to district equipment.
J. Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire/EMS facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; maintains hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains, and tests fire/EMS apparatus and equipment.
K. Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and EMS activities.
L.  Presents programs to the community/district on safety, medical, and fire prevention/suppression topics.
M. Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects. 
N. Maintains required certifications in suppression and EMS.
O. Meets district continuing education requirements.
P. Maintains positive working relationships with the public and other district members.

Peripheral Duties:
A. Interacts with, supports, and assists members as directed within the chain-of- command.
B. Assists in training new members, as assigned.
C. Assumes duties of a Company Officer, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
A. High school graduate or GED equivalent.
B. Possess a valid driver’s license.
C. Clean driving record for the previous two years.
D. Kentucky Certified Volunteer Firefighter.
E. Kentucky Certified Emergency Medical Technician.
F. Valid CPR Certification.
G.  SAED certified (or must be certified within six months of employment).
H. Operations Level Certified in Hazardous Materials (or must be certified within 6 months).

Minimum Requirements:
A. Must live within a 25-mile straight-line radius of the Burlington Fire Protection District headquarters station.
B.  Must be a citizen of the United States of America.
C. Must be able to pass a complete health screen process including drug and alcohol testing which is provided by the official medical physician of the district before appointment.
D. Minimum age requirement is 18 years of age.
E.  Must be able to speak, read, and write the English language.

Training Requirements:
A.  Must obtain Kentucky Career Firefighter Certification within one year of employment. Training is available within the district both on and off duty. Hours may also be achieved at other fire departments or fire schools.
B.  Must maintain the State requirement of 100 hours for Career Firefighter Certification and State Incentive Pay.
C. Must maintain Kentucky State EMT-B Certification, in accordance with Kentucky State EMS Regulations.
D. Must maintain Boone County SAED certification as required by the district.

Selection Guidelines:
May include any or all of the following: Formal application; written test; practical skills examination; physical ability test; oral examination; background/driver’s license verification and check; hiring list; offer of employment; post-offer physical examination, including drug screen.

Tools and Equipment Used:
Emergency medical apparatus, fire apparatus; fire pumps, hoses, and other standard firefighting equipment; ladders, emergency medical equipment; radio; pager; personal computer; telephone.
