Definition
Under direction, performs specialized technical instructional support duties in an emergency medical technology (EMT) laboratory, classroom, or similar instructional setting by assisting students in developing competencies and completing assigned academic work using an established framework of procedures and protocols; oversees and coordinates the use of laboratory equipment and facilities; sets up and/or conducts specialized lesson-based activities based on in-depth knowledge of EMT; assists students and/or instructors in using various specialized EMT instructional technologies and equipment; uses various instructional support methods/tools to reinforce instruction, terminology, concepts, principles, techniques and/or procedures; tracks student participation and attendance, assesses competencies, and proctors laboratory examinations; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Supervision
Works under the direct supervision of the respective Dean. May receive work direction from, but is not directly or indirectly supervised by, an instructor or division/department chair.
Does not directly or indirectly supervise other employees but may provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers.
Work Schedule
Full-time, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year
Monday-Thursday: 11:00 AM-9:00 PM

Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties and responsibilities are typical of those performed in this classification.
- Performs specialized technical instructional support duties in an EMT laboratory, classroom, or similar instructional setting by assisting students in developing competencies and completing assigned laboratory work using an established framework of procedures and protocols.
- Oversees and coordinates the use of laboratory equipment and facilities; maintains facilities and equipment and stores equipment and materials.
- Sets up and/or conducts specialized exercises, simulations, demonstrations, classroom assignments, and other lesson-based activities based on in-depth knowledge of EMT; prepares equipment, materials, and supplies; demonstrates the proper and safe use of equipment and materials; properly cleans and stores equipment and supplies after use.
- Assists instructors and students in using various specialized equipment and facilities; may schedule laboratory and/or equipment usage for instructors and/or individual students; may check equipment in and out.
- Assists students and/or instructors in using technology, including learning management system, student account, and internal communication platforms; sets up and configures software applications to meet specific student or class needs; provides assistance on standard business applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, email, and internet tools.
- Uses various instructional support methods/tools to reinforce and assist students with the application of instruction, terminology, concepts, principles, techniques and/or procedures including specialized computer hardware, peripherals, and applications; explains assignments to one or more students and guides them in the use of equipment and materials to perform class activities.
- Tracks student participation and attendance, assesses competencies, and proctors laboratory examinations to monitor student progress based on specific rubrics and criteria; informs instructors of related issues or problems.
- Monitors inventories and confers with faculty on the equipment and supplies required for proposed curricula; researches the cost and availability of needed technologies and laboratory equipment; submits requests to management for the purchase of needed items.
- Maintains electronic and hard copy records and files pertaining to student participation, performance, and progress in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations.
- May perform routine computer hardware and software maintenance, installations, and/or updates; may calibrate and maintain specialized equipment related to assigned areas; troubleshoots and resolves minor equipment problems and notifies appropriate staff of needed repairs or replacement.
- May assist management with monitoring budgets, compiling, and reporting data; may recommend changes to laboratory policies and procedures.
- May coordinate subject related activities and workshops.
- May provide work direction to, lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The education, training, and experience qualifications are considered likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the above essential duties.
Education and Experience
Three (3) years of experience as a certified/licensed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic, including instructional assistance/training experience.
Licenses/Certifications/Other Requirements
- Current licensure/certification as an EMT or Paramedic in Los Angeles County.
- Current certification as an American Heart Association CPR Instructor.
- Possession of a valid California driver's license.
Knowledge of:
- Usage, security, and maintenance of a laboratory facility.
- Current EMT principles, techniques, concepts, methods, terminology, procedures, and/or practices.
- Specialized EMT instructional technologies and equipment, materials and supplies.
- General laboratory/classroom procedures including safety procedures applicable to the areas of assignment.
- Learning management system software.
- Recordkeeping and inventory techniques.
- Laws, regulations, standards, and requirements applicable to areas of assignment.
- Technical methods of data research, collection, compilation, organization, and reporting.
- Methods of prioritizing, planning, and organizing work.
- Standard office practices or procedures.
- Standard office software and modern office equipment.
- Standard formats for business correspondence and other communications.
- Methods of filing information using alpha, numeric and alphanumeric systems.
- Correct use of the English language, including spelling, punctuation, grammar, and composition.
- Principles and practices of customer service.
- Business arithmetic.
Ability to:
- Coordinate usage, security, and maintenance of a laboratory facility.
- Stay abreast of changes to procedures, trends, and licensing/certification requirements applicable to the subject of assignment.
- Demonstrate, explain, and assist one or more students with EMT terminology, procedures, practices, methods, concepts, principles, and/or techniques.
- Prepare, use, demonstrate, and/or maintain specialized equipment, technologies, and materials in EMT.
- Explain and apply general laboratory/classroom procedures including safety procedures applicable to the areas of assignment.
- Monitor student progress.
- Maintain inventory and facilities.
- Understand and explain laws, regulations, policies, and other requirements applicable to the areas of assignment.
- Research, collect, organize, and report data.
- Operate a variety of office equipment including computers and printers/copiers.
- Utilize standard office software (e.g., email, word processing, and spreadsheet software).
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information.
- Prepare reports, correspondence, and other documents using multiple business formats.
- Maintain hard copy and electronic files and records.
- Perform business arithmetic.
- Prioritize work and complete assignments accurately and within established deadlines.
- Provide and obtain detailed information to/from others.
- Provide customer service with a high level of sensitivity, tact and patience.
- Exercise reasonable judgment in performing job duties.
- Work and perform duties independently.
- Perform and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.
- Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS
The following physical and mental standards are identified as necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities. However, reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Mobility: frequent sitting or standing for long periods; occasional kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, and walking; occasional reaching above and below desk level.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Work is typically performed in an instructional laboratory setting.
Additional Information
Salary
The Instructional Support Specialist, EMT classification's current salary range is R-30.
Starting salary is from Step 1: $4911.69 to Step 3: $5415.13 per month depending upon education and experience.
Salary range: Step 1: $4911.69 to Step 6: $6268.69 per month (plus longevity where applicable)
