Purpose of this position: Under the general administrative direction of the EMS Deputy Chief (Manager) Education and the EMS Assistant Chief (Director) is responsible for the administration and coordination of the department’s paramedic programs as part of the education unit.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Paramedic Programs Principal is responsible for program planning, organization, administration, periodic review, program evaluation, continued program development, and program effectiveness, including:
Coordinates the development of the educational content of the program curriculum and schedule to ensure appropriateness and medical accuracy
Conducts program planning meetings and advisory board meetings
Monitors the quality of the instruction and evaluation of the students
Assures the quality of clinical and field internship phases of the program
Assures qualified instruction by EMS Educators and Instructors
Participates in providing instruction to students
Reviews and approves the progress of each student and facilitate the development of appropriate corrective measures when a student does not show adequate progress
Assures the competence of each graduate of the program in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains
Responsible for cooperative involvement with the program Medical Director
Assures the quality of delegated responsibilities
Serves as the liaison to CAPCE for all matters involving the organization’s accreditation
Works with the physician medical director and instructional personnel to accomplish the following requirements: needs assessment, program planning, program implementation, program evaluation and revision and selection of instructional personnel
Develops and maintains the Paramedic Programs annual budget
Develops and maintains all necessary contractual agreements
Develops appropriate program syllabi
Supervises the cleaning and maintenance of all medical devices and audio-visual equipment necessary for implementing the organization’s activities
Keeps appropriate records that include all of the required information (see section on Attendance Verification, Records Maintenance and Reporting in chapter 2)
Monitors adherence to CAPCE requirements
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a health, business, or education related area plus two years of approved paramedic experience with an active ALS service and two years teaching experience in EMS education programs where leadership skills and clinical competence have been demonstrated; or An approved equivalent combination of education and experience
Current certification as a Paramedic with the State of Minnesota or valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of Minnesota
Must have a valid Class D Minnesota driver’s license or equivalent, and must have a satisfactory driving record including no more than 2 moving violations in the past 3 years of licensure
Must complete an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) or National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course as designated by Hennepin EMS
Must qualify for and maintain a Hennepin County motor vehicle operators permit
Current BLS, ACLS and PALS Instructor by the American Heart Association or approved equivalent
OR
An approved equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in a health, business, or educational related area plus four years of approved paramedic experience with an active ALS service and two years of teaching experience in pre-hospital emergency care; OR
Master's degree in nursing with minimum of four years of current professional nursing experience in emergency care or other critical care setting and two years of teaching experience in nursing, healthcare, EMS or closely related field.
